Mahogany has a straight, fine, and even grain. Its reddish-brown color darkens over time, and displays a reddish sheen when polished. Mahogany is native to the Caribbean, Central and South American lowland tropical or subtropical forests where rainfall averages between 1 and 2.5 meters. It was used to patch ship planks for Hernando Cortez in 1514 and is still widely harvested today with the United States being the largest importer.
Slate is a fine-grained metamorphic rock derived from sedimentary rock composed of clay or volcanic ash through low-grade regional metamorphism. In 18th and 19th century schools, slate was extensively used for blackboards and individual writing slates, for which slate or chalk pencils were used. Slate was used by earlier cultures as whetstone to hone knives.
