What Actually Matters for an Engagement Ring?

Engagement rings are worn almost every day, so durability is the main thing to focus on.

There are three factors we care about:

  • Hardness – how resistant the stone is to scratching
  • Toughness – how well it handles impact without chipping
  • Maintenance – how much upkeep it needs over time

As a general rule, stones rated 8 or higher on the Mohs scale are the safest for long-term wear.

One important note, everything here is based on engagement rings specifically, meaning daily use. Fashion rings are a different ball game. Since they’re worn less often, you can get away with softer stones there without running into the same long-term issues.

The Mina (Emerald-Cut) The Anna Grace (Pink Diamond) The Soren (Oval)

Diamond, The Benchmark

Diamonds are still the standard, and it mostly comes down to durability.

They rank a 10 on the Mohs scale, making them extremely resistant to scratching. They also hold up very well to everyday wear and tear.

If set properly, a diamond can last a lifetime, easily 50+ years of daily wear without needing anything more than basic maintenance like cleaning and occasional prong checks.

On top of that, they give you the most flexibility in terms of shape, size, and color options.

If your goal is something you never really have to think twice about, diamond is hard to beat.

The Adeline (Emerald-Cut) The Austen (Rose-Cut) The Raven (Black Moissanite)

Moissanite, A Strong Alternative

Moissanite has become one of the most popular alternatives to diamonds, and it makes sense why.

It ranks around 9.25 on the Mohs scale, so durability is not a concern. It holds up very well with daily wear and can last 20 to 50+ years.

Visually, it’s very close to a diamond, with one key difference. It throws more rainbow flashes of light. Some people love that, others prefer the more subtle sparkle of a diamond. Also like diamond, moissanite is available in a wide range of colors.

From a performance standpoint, though, it’s a very safe choice.

The Diana (Blue Sapphire) The Eileen (Padparadscha Sapphire ) The Guinevere (Green Sapphire)

Sapphire and Ruby, Durable Color Options

Sapphires and rubies are part of the same mineral family, so they perform almost identically.

They rank a 9 on the Mohs scale, which puts them just below diamonds in terms of hardness. In real-world wear, that means they hold up extremely well and are one of the safest alternatives to a diamond.

With daily wear, you can expect 20 to 50+ years of lifespan.

Sapphires are great if you want color without sacrificing durability. Most people think blue, but they actually come in a wide range of colors.

Rubies lean more bold, with that deep red color tied to love and passion, which makes them a natural fit for engagement rings.

The only real caveat here is that over decades, you may start to see light surface wear, but nothing major.

The Verdeline (Emerald) The Elowen & Clementine (Aquamarine) The Sedona (Morganite)

The Beryl Family, Beautiful but With Tradeoffs

This is where things start to shift a bit.

Emerald, aquamarine, and morganite all come from the same mineral family, beryl. They share a similar hardness range, around 7.5 to 8, which means they’re usable for engagement rings, but not as tough as the stones above.

Emerald is the most well-known. That deep green color is hard to beat, but most emeralds have natural inclusions. Those inclusions can make them more prone to chipping.

With daily wear, you’re usually looking at around 10 to 20 years, depending on how the ring is worn and how well it’s protected.

Aquamarine has a lighter, cleaner blue tone. It typically has fewer inclusions than emerald, which helps a bit with durability, but it’s still not built for heavy wear.

Expect around 5 to 15 years before noticeable wear starts to show.

Morganite is known for its soft pink color and romantic look. It performs similarly to aquamarine in terms of durability and can also get cloudy over time if not cleaned regularly.

Again, around 5 to 15 years is a realistic expectation.

Across the board, these stones can absolutely work, but they benefit from protective settings and a more mindful wearer. They’re more about the look than long-term durability.

Stones That Don’t Hold Up Well to Daily Wear

This is the part that doesn’t always get talked about enough.

There are a lot of stones that look incredible, especially online, but just don’t hold up well for everyday use.

Opal is a big one. It has a really unique look, but it’s soft and sensitive to moisture and temperature changes. With daily wear, it may only last 1 to 5 years before showing significant wear or damage.

Pearl is even softer. It can scratch just from normal contact and can be damaged by things like lotion or sweat. Most pearl rings will show heavy wear within 1 to 3 years if worn daily.

Moss Agate, which is trending a lot right now, has that cool, organic look. The downside is durability. It ranks around 6.5 to 7, so it can scratch and chip fairly easily.

With daily wear, you’re realistically looking at around 3 to 10 years, depending on how careful you are.

Moonstone falls into a similar category. It’s soft and prone to scratching and chipping, usually showing wear within 2 to 5 years.

Turquoise is porous, which means it can absorb oils and discolor over time. It also scratches easily. Expect 1 to 5 years with regular wear.

Lapis Lazuli and onyx both have a bold look but are relatively soft. They tend to scratch and lose their polish fairly quickly in everyday conditions.

These stones aren’t “bad”, they’re just not built for the kind of wear an engagement ring typically goes through.

Choosing the Best Stone for Your Engagement Ring

At the end of the day, the best stone comes down to how you plan to wear the ring.

If you want something that can handle daily life without much thought, diamonds, sapphires, rubies, and moissanite are your safest options. These are long-term stones that will hold up for decades.

If you’re drawn to something like emerald, aquamarine, or morganite, it just comes down to understanding the tradeoffs. They can absolutely work, but they’ll require a bit more care and may show wear sooner.

And if you’re considering stones like opal, pearl, or moss agate, it’s all about expectations. They’re better suited for lighter wear or occasional use rather than something you never take off.

There’s no wrong choice here.

It’s just about making sure the stone fits your lifestyle as much as it fits your style.
