Why is Getting The Perfect Wedding Ring Size Important for Men?
From your wedding photographer to your venue, there are countless details to consider for your wedding day. But, choosing your wedding rings (especially your wedding ring size) is one detail that will affect you long after your nuptials have past.
Getting the right ring size the first time can save you some major headaches and allow you to enjoy your unique wedding ring to the fullest.
Whether it’s cutting off circulation or you constantly have to keep your ring from falling off your hand, getting the wrong ring size can make your life extremely uncomfortable.
Definitely more than one groom has lost his wedding band due to sizing issues, and replacing it either leads to getting a cheap wedding ring replacement you didn’t particularly want or adding a hefty (and unnecessary) fee to your long list of wedding expenses.
You might even stop wearing your ring because it isn’t the right size, which could seriously rub your new spouse the wrong way.
How Do I Figure Out My Wedding Ring Size?
Depending on the jeweler and the type of ring you get, your ring size could vary. The safest bet is to get sized at the establishment from where you plan to purchase your wedding ring.
When you get a ring from R&M, we ALWAYS recommend using our ring sizing kit to reduce sizing issues.
How Should a Men’s Wedding Band Fit?
As Mike, R&M’s founder, says:
“Your ring should not be so tight that you regret your life choices, and not so loose that they fall off when you’re running from a bear… or what you thought was a bear.”
A good rule of thumb is to find the loosest ring size you can wear that will stay on your finger when you give your hand a good shake (see example in the video below).
The ring is too tight if you notice bulging or an indentation after wearing it for a little while.
Another test you can do is put your ring on your fourth finger and press your thumb against the ring right above your palm. Hold that pose and check the back of your hand to see if there’s a small gap between your ring and finger. If there’s a little space, then it’s a good indicator the ring isn’t too tight.
Can My Wedding Ring Size Change Throughout The Day?
The short answer is yes. There are several factors, including temperature, activity, and even the food you eat, that can cause your finger to change ring size. This is why we recommend, when using an R&M Ring Sizing Kit, to wear the sizer with the best fit for at least 24 hours to make sure it stays comfortable throughout your typical day.
What Are Some Other Factors That Can Affect How My Wedding Band Fits?
One big thing that can get overlooked with men’s wedding bands is how the width affects the fit of your ring. If you get a thicker band, you will want to size up, while a thinner design might require you to size down.

Another element that plays a factor in your ring's fit is the shape of your finger. If your fingers taper toward your nails, you’ll want a design that has a snug fit at your finger's base. If your knuckles are the thickest point, you will need to find a ring that fits over the knuckle, so this usually means the ring will feel a little loose when it sits at the base.
