This collection is personal for us.
Rustic & Main’s founder, Mike, is a Navy veteran. Summer’s (Mike’s wife and co-founder) grandfather served in the Navy during World War II and later in the Air Force during peacetime. Service isn’t an abstract concept in our family or in our workshop, it’s part of the reason this company exists and part of the reason we approach our craft the way we do: with discipline, with respect for materials, and with the belief that the things you wear should carry meaning. It’s who we are. It’s in our blood.
So when we set out to build a military-inspired collection, we didn’t reach for camo print and call it a day. We went looking for materials with real meaning, wood from the decks of actual WWII battleships, walnut from historic rifle stocks, wool from authentic Navy uniforms. Materials that carried the weight of service before they ever became part of a ring.
This guide walks through our military collection: what’s in it, where the materials come from, how we build these rings in our Huntersville, NC production studio, and how you can customize one to honor your own connection to service, whether you’re active duty, a veteran, or looking for a unique gift for someone who served.
The Materials: What We Keep on Hand and Where They Come From
Every material in our military collection has a documented history. We don’t use “military-style” finishes or decorative approximations. These are the real deal and have lived a life before making its way into your ring.

Battleship Teak
Teak was king in the world of 19th and 20th-century shipbuilding. This Southeast Asian hardwood holds up against wind, rain, and waves without warping or rotting. Its natural oils repel water so effectively that shipbuilders often left teak decks unfinished. The wood’s tight, straight grain makes it strong and gives it a rich texture that ranges from warm silver to deep ochre depending on the finish. We source our teak from the original decks of historic US battleships. These aren’t reproductions. This is the same wood that was walked upon, fought upon, and stood upon by American sailors across multiple generations of service. The battleships we currently carry teak from include:
USS North Carolina: Commissioned in 1941, she was the newest and fastest battleship the US had ever built at the time. She led every major naval offensive in the Pacific during WWII and earned 15 battle stars. After decommissioning, she was permanently moored in Wilmington, NC as a museum and memorial. When her teak decks were replaced during a 1998 renovation, Rustic & Main acquired a stock of this historic wood.
USS New Jersey: Launched on December 7th, 1942, exactly one year after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the USS New Jersey went on to serve in WWII, the Korean War, and Vietnam. She is the most decorated battleship in American naval history with 19 battle and campaign stars. Our teak was sourced directly from The Battleship New Jersey museum, with all proceeds going to the ship’s restoration and preservation.
USS Alabama: Another WWII-era battleship that served in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters.
USS Texas: One of the oldest surviving dreadnought battleships, she saw action in both World Wars.
USS California: Sunk during the attack on Pearl Harbor, the USS California was raised, repaired, and returned to service, fighting through the rest of the war. It’s a story of resilience that resonates with a lot of our customers.

Historic Rifle Stock Walnut
The Springfield 1903 was the standard-issue rifle for the US military from 1903 through WWII. Its stock was crafted from American black walnut, a wood chosen for its strength, shock absorption, and beautiful grain. We’ve sourced authentic Springfield 1903 rifle stock walnut and use it as an inlay material in our military rings. The wood carries the marks of its service: grain patterns shaped by decades of handling, oil absorbed from countless hands, and a patina that can’t be replicated.

WWII Navy Uniform Wool
Wool was the primary uniform material in WWI and WWII. It was favored over cotton because it retains heat when wet, crucial for sailors on the high seas. We carry authentic dark blue WWII US Navy uniform wool for inlays. It’s a subtle, deeply meaningful detail that most people won’t notice at first glance, but the wearer will always know it’s there.
Additional Materials We Mix In
Our military rings don’t have to be purely military materials. We regularly pair the historic elements above with complementary materials to create something that’s both a tribute and a personal statement:
Whiskey barrel wood: A natural pairing with battleship teak. The contrast between the teak and a whiskey barrel inlay gives the ring visual depth and connects two great American traditions.
Bloodwood: Used as an inlay in several of our battleship teak designs. The deep red color is both striking and symbolic, honoring those who gave their time and lives in service.
Meteorite dust with gold flakes: Featured in The Navigator, this combination pairs celestial wonder with naval history.
Three Best Sellers From the Collection
These are the rings our customers keep coming back to. Each one tells a different story, but they share the same foundation: historic materials, handcrafted in our Huntersville workshop, made to order for you.

The USS North Carolina
The ring that helped launch our company. This is crafted from teak taken from the original decks of the USS North Carolina, the battleship that led every major Pacific naval offensive in WWII.

The USS New Jersey
The most decorated battleship in American history deserves a ring to match. This design features teak from the USS New Jersey’s original decking. The teak was sourced directly from the Battleship New Jersey museum, proceeds support the ship’s ongoing restoration.

The Navy
This one is layered with meaning. The Navy wedding band features three inlays: historic WWII battleship teak (your choice of USS NC or USS NJ), authentic WWII US Navy uniform wool, and a center metal inlay, all set in a titanium band. It’s a tribute to the Navy specifically, but the craftsmanship and story make it resonate with anyone who has a connection to military service.
Our Favorite Custom Ring From This Collection: The Great War
Every once in a while, a ring design comes together in a way that's bigger than the sum of its parts. For us, that ring is The Great War.
It's a band inlaid with two materials that, side by side, tell a story spanning both World Wars: WWII-era Springfield 1903 rifle stock walnut and olive drab wool cut from an authentic WWI US Army uniform.
The Springfield 1903 was a thing of beauty long before it became part of a ring. Originally developed in response to the Spanish Mauser rifles that outmatched American troops during the Spanish-American War, the Springfield became the standard-issue rifle for US soldiers heading into the trenches of World War I. Theodore Roosevelt carried one on his hunting expeditions in Africa and reportedly threw a fit when he saw the flimsy bayonets on the first production run, demanding changes before the rifles were put in soldiers' hands. The walnut stocks were crafted by skilled hands, and the ones we use carry a deep chocolate-brown color and highly visible grain that only decades of history can produce. They're also getting harder to find. The Springfield 1903 rifle stock wood is one of the rarest materials in our workshop.
The olive drab wool comes from the other side of the ring and the other side of the story. WWI was the first time this material was issued to American Army troops. In most cases, these were shirts worn as the first layer of a soldier's uniform. Enlisted men and officers wore the same fabric, only insignias and black armbands separated them in rank. The contrast between the coarse wool texture and the smooth walnut grain creates something that catches people off guard. It doesn't look like what you'd expect from a "military ring." It looks like something with weight behind it.
We offer The Great War in titanium, solid gold, and silver, but the materials are what make it. And that's what we love about this ring: it doesn't need a flag on it or a branch insignia to say what it means. The materials do the talking. Two wars, two eras, one ring. It's our way of honoring the generations who served and it remains the ring our team is most proud to make.
Making It Yours: The Custom Ring Process
Every ring in our military collection can be customized, and we can build something from scratch if nothing on the shelf fits your vision. Here’s how that works:
Our Ring Customizer tool lets you start with a base design and adjust the materials, metal type, width, and inlay configuration. Want USS New Jersey teak and Springfield 1903 rifle stock walnut inlaid in rose gold? We can do that. Want to combine battleship teak with elk antler and a copper accent? Done.
For more involved custom work, incorporating personal materials, building a design from a description, or creating a matching set for a couple, reach out to our team directly. We’ve built custom men’s wedding bands with materials customers sent us from their own family histories: pieces of a grandfather’s uniform, wood from a decommissioned vessel they served on, even fragments from a retired firearm.
Every custom ring is handcrafted to order in our Huntersville, NC production studio just outside of Charlotte, NC by our team of skilled artisans. Nothing is outsourced. Nothing is mass-produced. The crafter who shapes the teak is working with wood that’s older than most of us and they treat it accordingly.

Who These Rings Are For
We designed this collection to honor service, but it doesn’t belong to any single branch, rank, or era. Our military rings resonate with a wide range of people:
Active duty service members looking for a wedding band that reflects their identity and commitment, one that means more than a plain metal band.
Veterans who want to carry a piece of their service with them daily, long after they’ve hung up the uniform.
Spouses and family members searching for a unique gift for an active duty service member or veteran, something that says “I see what you’ve given and I honor it.”
History enthusiasts who may not have served themselves but have a deep respect for American military history and want to wear a piece of it.
Sons and daughters of veterans who want to honor a parent’s or grandparent’s service. A ring from this collection would be a way to keep that legacy close.
We offer a 10% military discount for all active duty, veteran, retired, and reservist service members. Just let us know when you order.
Built to Carry a Story That Matters

Most wedding bands start their story at the jeweler’s counter. A military ring from Rustic & Main starts its story decades, sometimes a century, before it reaches your finger. The teak was laid on a battleship deck. The walnut was shaped into a rifle stock. The wool was sewn into a uniform. These materials served before they became rings, and that history doesn’t disappear when our craftsmen reshape them in our Huntersville workshop just 20 minutes from Charlotte, NC. It becomes part of your story.
Mike started this company in part because of what service taught him: that the things worth having are the things you build with care, with intention, and with respect for what came before. Every ring in this collection reflects that belief.
